This listing is a bit different, and intended only for those who are seriously interested in more horsepower, quicker response, better reliability, a better/smoother running engine/drive-train, less maintenance, parts longevity, fuel efficiency, and saving money.

Those who know me well, know that I spend hundreds of hours each year doing tons of research on all sorts of racing related items that will benefit my racing program & all of the other racers that I’ve helped over the years.

Several months ago I started researching a highly overlooked area in racing, something that might give me that “little extra“. And because of what I’ve found out, I’ve been kicking myself ever since. Unbelievable! How could I have been so misinformed for all of these years? I think about all of the headaches, the hundreds of hours, and the thousands of dollars I could have saved!

So what could possibly be responsible for all of that? Well, as silly as it all sounds, it’s simply the area of “Automotive Lubricants”. You may scoff or laugh at this notion, but think about it. How many of you racers that have been around for awhile, have either personally, or know someone who seems to constantly have problems with: oil pressure, overheating, blown motors (due to a spun rod, main or cam bearing), toasted rocker arms or push rods, eating camshafts or lifters, worn out timing chains or distributor gears, highly worn cylinder walls, worn or galled piston skirts, pins or valve stems? (FYI: Rod & Main Bearings should last for several years)

Oh, and what about these: smoked or badly worn wheel/axle bearings, worn or stuck control arm bushings, tie rods, idler arms, ball joints, worn out u-joints, or has anyone ever had problems with the bearings or gears in their tranny or rear end? And don’t forget about the power steering pump, steering sector (box) or rack. Being involved with racing for over 25 years now, I have personally experienced the wrath of over 80% of these areas! It sucks thinking about the thousands of dollars I’ve had to spend over the years, just to replace these worn/broken parts. What a waste! And I hate to think about the countless hours of labor also involved.

Got your attention yet? It’s funny, how as racers, most of us have no problem spending thousands on parts, machine work or labor,,, but then go to Auto Zone or wherever, & look for the Cheapest deal they have on oil products. So why on earth would we do something stupid like that? Usually because we’re broke after paying for those parts, machine work & labor!

I’ve often wondered, who came up with the idea that we’re suppose to change our oil & filter every 2 or 3 nights? Aren’t we supposed to be able to go 3000 miles or 6 months? You can if you’d like, but when running conventional oil, it tends not to like that. Have you noticed how nasty conventional oil looks & smells after only 3 nights of racing? There are several reasons why it does.

1. Petroleum (conventional) motor oil breaks down under heat and stress and leaves carbon, varnish and sludge deposits in your engine and allows engine components to wear at an increased rate when compared to synthetic oil. Also, average petroleum motor oils have a much lower shear strength than good “Grade 4” synthetic motor oils.

Many factors contribute to a motor oil’s demise, but it’s essentially the accumulation of contaminants in the oil and chemical changes in the oil itself that make a motor oil unfit for further service (due to fuel dilution or possibly from water seepage). With time, it is inevitable that the oil will be contaminated by dirt or sludge, or succumbs to the extreme pressures or temperatures found inside an engine.

2. When your engine experiences a lot of engine wear, all of those engine particles have to go somewhere, they don’t just evaporate! Supposedly the filters job is to catch all of these particles, unfortunately this leads us to reason 3.

3. Cellulose (paper) and blended medias found in most oil filters have large fibers and they also have large spaces between their fibers. This causes contaminants to load in the depth of the media and plug the oil-flow path, resulting in higher restriction and less capacity. Conventional Brand Name cellulose oil filters have a “Filter Efficiency of 39.39% @ 15 Microns” (per ISO 4548-12)(A human hair is approx. 80 microns thick). This is Very Bad, but don’t worry, this is an easy fix, which I’ll talk about in a bit.

The function of the oil filter is to remove the contaminants* introduced into the lubricating oil and prevent them from reaching sensitive engine parts without restricting normal oil flow to the various points requiring lubrication. A filter must perform well in the areas of efficiency, capacity, flow and life.

*Internal sources of contamination include wear products from the rubbing surfaces of the engine, blow-by gases leaking past the rings of the pistons and the degradation of the oil itself.

4. Here’s an area that is often overlooked by most racers, Air Filtration!  Ever notice all of the dirt particles down in the carb, when you remove the air cleaner? (that lovely dirty red coating down in the carb) That’s barely a portion of what’s already run through your engine! In the past I’ve run a Wix Racing Filter, which I can literally see through. Did it flow? YES. Did it filter worth a crap? NO. And at other times I’ve run an inexpensive paper filter that filtered fairly well, but wouldn’t flow.

An engine needs air in order for combustion to occur, but the air drawn in through the induction system is loaded with contaminants. FACT: There are over 400 tons of suspended dirt and other contaminants in a cubic mile of air over a typical city. The concentration can be even higher in rural areas where there is frequent travel on unpaved roads. The dirt and contaminants drawn into an engine are the leading causes of engine wear.

The function of the air filter is to trap and hold these wear causing contaminants without restricting airflow. Proper airflow is vital to maximize performance and engine life. It takes 1,200 cubic feet of air to combust one gallon of gasoline. Inadequate airflow can cause serious loss of power, poor performance and excessive fuel consumption. That’s one of the reasons none of my cars will run a K&N Filter. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve solved a racer’s carburetion problem by removing a K&N filter & replacing it with a cheap paper filter. K&N filters are an OK type of filter for a very short period of time, when they are properly maintained (as far as air-flow is concerned). Problem is though, the cleaning & oiling kits are expensive and most racers don’t have the time or patience to constantly keep them maintained.

I’ve found an air filter that: Filters down to 0.8 microns (99% efficient @ 2 microns), Flows 3 times more air than cellulose filters, Holds up to five times more contaminants than cellulose air filters & 15 times more contaminants than a wet gauze (K&N) type filter. (Plus, it requires very little maintenance!)

So,,, how do we fix all of these problems? Is there actually one company out there that can actually help rectify all of these lubrication & filtration problems?  Yes there is!

The more I researched the subject of lubricants, the more one name kept popping up, AMSOIL. I’ve talked to several oil specialists from across the country, and they’ve all had ONLY High Praises for all of the Amsoil Products. I was also amazed at how involved Amsoil is with racing, ALL TYPES of racing! Champions in: circle track, drag racing, all types of motorcycle racing, SCCA, go-karting, offshore powerboat racing, IRL, Nextel Cup,,,, etc, etc, etc,,,, But how can this be? I’ve been around racing for over 25 years, but before a few months ago, I never even heard of Amsoil. So who is this company?

In 1972, the Amsoil Corporation introduced the very first Synthetic Oil, for automotive use, to the World. Even back then, this oil was so good, it came with a 25,000 mile / 1 year warrantee! And even today, 35 years later, Amsoil is still the only oil company in the world that has oil products with a 25,000 mile/1 year warrantee, & a 35,000 mile/1 year warrantee. They’re also the only company that warrantees their EaO Oil Filters (w/nano-fiber technology) for up to 25,000 mile/1 year. Also, their Awesome EaA Nona-Fiber, Air Filters come with a 100,000 mile/ 4 year warrantee?

How good is this company & it’s products? Here’s a fun bit of info:

AMSOIL is "The First in Synthetics" and also the first in quality, protection and performance. Every other oil company in the world was given the chance to object when AMSOIL applied for trademark rights to "The First in Synthetics", yet after 90 days of waiting, not a single one objected!

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Officials stated that by claiming that AMSOIL was the first historically, that AMSOIL was also insinuating to be the best (or #1/first) from a quality or performance standpoint. AMSOIL showed the government officials comparison documentation and test data backing up the claim that AMSOIL was also the best.

After the government officials notified all other oil manufacturers that AMSOIL was claiming to be the best, not a single other oil company or competitor objected! Not a peep from any of them! I can guarantee you that if any of these competitors and major oil companies had a product better than AMSOIL they would have objected.

This, and a ton of other info on Amsoil & it’s products can be found on my website: www.synthetic-oil-tech.com/1528377  Check it out once you’re done here. After learning all about Amsoil & their awesome products, a couple of months ago, I signed up with them, I’ve taken the training, and I’m now a T-1 Certified, Independent Amsoil Dealer. I have many of the Amsoil products on hand at my shop, and as far as I know, I’m the only shop around offering: Guaranteed 25,000 mile / 1 year oil changes,,, and with Amazing Results (according to my customers).

Almost all of them have reported back to me, on how much better their vehicles are performing. Running Smoother, More Responsive, More Powerful, Running Cooler, and the big one: Better Mileage! And I have to agree with them, I can‘t begin to tell you how much better all of my vehicles run! PLUS, I don‘t have to even worry about changing it again for a whole year! How convenient would that be for you who have a child or spouse that never seems to pay attention to their mileage, let alone all the time & money you‘ll save! (Needless to say, but I no longer offer standard oil changes.)

So, why are Amsoil products so good?

The majority of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are formulated with polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic base stocks. PAO base stocks offer unsurpassed protection and performance and are widely recognized as the industry's premier base stock technology. Unlike conventional base stocks, PAO base stocks contain fully saturated, hydrogenated molecules that are free of wax and impurities, allowing superior performance in temperature extremes, oxidation and acid resistance and clean operation. Synthetic oils formulated with less expensive synthetic base stocks also offer performance benefits over conventional oils, but they cannot match the performance of PAOs for the high standards required for AMSOIL synthetic motor oils.

Now, let’s talk about a few of the racing products.
These are only a few of Amsoil’s Huge product line.

Oil Info:

Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50 Racing Oil (TRO)
The number one choice for racers of all types of vehicles. Special synthetic base stock blend and advanced additive package provides up to four times the wear protection of other motor oils. Reduces friction for quicker engine response and increased horsepower.

Unbeatable Lubrication and Protection in High-Performance Gasoline Engines

Engines in race cars and high-performance street cars face high temperatures, vigorous engine speeds and heavy loads. AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil offers unmatched protection for engines facing tough operating conditions.

Unbeatable Wear Protection
AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil is specially formulated to carry the oil’s wear reducing and heat transferring agents to the engine’s surfaces and hold them there. By positioning vital agents where they are most needed, Series 2000 provides a degree of engine protection unavailable with any other oil.

AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil clings tenaciously to engine surfaces, so it shields engines from start-up wear. Further enhancing wear protection, AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil’s wax-free lubricating base stocks assure rapid post-start-up lubrication.

AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil contains powerful corrosion preventatives, detergents, dispersants and anti-foam agents to protect engines from the harmful effects of water, acids, debris, deposit-forming materials and air entrained oil.

Boosts Power, Speed and Efficiency
AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil is a friction-reducing oil that minimizes power wasted on “drag.” This extraordinary formulation helps vehicles accelerate fast, attain top speeds and use fuel efficiently.

Maintains Integrity in Demanding Conditions
AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil maintains a constant high level of performance over time because it resists the damage many oils undergo in high temperature, intense shearing force conditions.

Advanced thermal stability allows AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil to withstand high heat, resisting viscosity buildup common to lesser-quality oils.

Superior shear stability allows AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Synthetic Racing Oil to provide a dependable pad of protection between parts even after exposure to shearing forces that tear lesser oils apart.

And for those of you who are looking for a “lighter weight” oil, Amsoil’s “Series 2000, 0w-30 Severe Service” is the oil of choice for several “Nextel Cup” teams. However, for racing, it’s recommended that when using a lower viscosity oil, tighter bearing clearances are recommended (not for older, looser tolerance motors). (Note: this is the oil that carries a 35,000 mile/1 year warrantee for normal service, street vehicles) I run this in my F150.

Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil (TSO)
Modern passenger car and light truck engines are built for fuel efficiency and power. AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil optimizes efficiency and power without the sacrifice in wear protection that comes with many fuel-efficient, low-viscosity oils.

Testing shows AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil dramatically outperforms popular conventional and synthetic motor oils of typical viscosities in wear protection (see chart below).

Oil Filter Info:

AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters (EaO)
Made with premium-grade full synthetic media. Ea Oil Filters feature advanced full synthetic nanofiber technology, making them the highest efficiency filters that are available for the auto/light truck market. AMSOIL EaO Filters are guaranteed for 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first, when used in conjunction with AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil in gasoline and diesel vehicles in normal service, 15,000 miles in severe service.

Absolute Efficiency
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters have the best efficiency rating in the industry. EaO Filters provide a filtering efficiency in accordance with industry standard ISO 4548-12 of 98.7 percent at 15 microns, while competitive filters containing conventional cellulose medias range from 40 to 80 percent efficiency.

Less Restriction
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters have significantly lower restriction than conventional cellulose media filters. Their small synthetic nanofibers trap smaller particles and hold more contaminants, resulting in lower restriction. During cold temperature warm-up periods, an EaO lube filter allows the oil to easily flow through the filter compared to a typical cellulose filter. Lower restriction decreases engine wear.

More Capacity
A filter’s capacity refers to the amount of contaminants it can hold and still remain effective. AMSOIL EaO Filters have a far greater capacity than competing filter lines. When used in conjunction with AMSOIL synthetic motor oils in normal service, EaO Filters are guaranteed to remain effective for 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

Superior Construction
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters are made with premium-grade full synthetic media. The strictly controlled processing of this media ensures accurate filter construction, and is what allows Ea Oil Filters to deliver higher capacity and efficiency along with better durability.

Over the service life of a conventional cellulose filter, hot oil will degrade the resins that bind the media. The Ea Oil Filters’ full synthetic media technology is resin-free. It uses a wire screen backing that is pleated with the media for superior strength.

Ea Oil Filters are constructed with HNBR nitrile gaskets that are fully tested to extreme distances in numerous severe environments. The filters also feature fully tucked seams, a molded element seal, roll-formed threads and a long-lasting premium-grade silicone anti-drain valve.

Air Filter Info:

EaAR Air Filters

AMSOIL EaAR Filters are specially designed for racing and street rod enthusiasts who desire AMSOIL Ea protection in carbureted applications. AMSOIL EaAR Air Filters are constructed with the same synthetic nanofiber media as other AMSOIL Ea Air Filters.

Expanded Applications
AMSOIL custom EaAR Filter assemblies are designed for racing applications. They incorporate good looks and excellent air flow in addition to the high efficiency afforded by AMSOIL Ea nanofiber technology. These custom air cleaner assemblies are designed for use with carbureted engines that use a 14-inch round element air cleaner housing. AMSOIL EaAR kits provide more air flow than competing assemblies. The kits feature the common 14-inch diameter carburetor plate, air filter and high air flow lid along with a two-inch, three-inch, four-inch, five-inch or six-inch-high filter. Replacement filters, air flow lids and carburetor plates are also sold separately.

Ea Air Flow Lids
AMSOIL EaAR Filter kits provide racers with more power through the new Ea air flow lids. The air flow lids are constructed using AMSOIL Ea nanofiber media, adding filtration area. They feature a polished aluminum trim ring with AMSOIL logos etched on the surface. Not only do the Ea air flow lids add filter area, they actually redirect air inside the filter to pull in more air through the side pleats for even greater performance efficiency.

Advanced Filtration Technology
AMSOIL EaAR Air Filters are designed to replace stock cellulose, oil-wetted gauze or foam filters. The nanofibers in EaAR Filter media have sub-micron diameters and small inter-fiber spaces, resulting in more contaminants being captured on the surface of the media. Cellulose, wetted gauze and foam filters are larger and have larger spaces between the fibers in the media, causing contaminants to load into the depth of the filter, plugging the airflow path and resulting in higher restriction than one micron in diameter, and because of their size, there are more pores per square-inch (higher pore density), allowing for higher dirt-holding capacity and lower pressure drop when compared to traditional filter media. Thinner media fibers, like those in EaAR Air Filters, produce more uniform pore size distribution, improving the filter’s overall ability to capture and retain particles.

Quality Construction
AMSOIL EaAR Filters’ nanofiber media is pleated with epoxy-coated wire for additional strength and stiffness. A high-quality plastisol potting compound is used to ensure filter media and screen stability while sealing the filter in the air box. The EaAR filtration system allows air to flow both through the side of the filter and through the nanofiber media of the lid, adding more filter area, greater performance and superior efficiency.

Quick Cleaning
AMSOIL EaAR Air Filters are cleanable and long lasting. AMSOIL recommends cleaning EaAR Filters when designated by the restriction gauge if the vehicle is so equipped, or according to operating conditions. In dusty conditions or in high-performance vehicles, more frequent cleaning may be required. EaAR Air Filters may be cleaned by vacuuming the media on the dirty side or using low-pressure shop air on the clean side. AMSOIL recommends cleaning EaAR Filters as conditions dictate.

EaPF Pre-Filters
AMSOIL now offers Ea Pre-Filters (EaPF) for racing and off-road applications. AMSOIL Ea Pre-Filters prevent large particles from sticking to EaAR and EaAU Filters and blocking the flow of air. Ea Pre-Filters fit over the top of existing air filters. These polyester mesh bags feature an industrial grade elastic band at the opening to ensure the pre-filter does not slide off.

Why Use Pre-Filters?
Racers and off-road enthusiasts subject their vehicles to some of the most severe conditions possible. These vehicles operate in areas of heavy dirt and mud that gets slung into every crack and corner, often clogging air filters. AMSOIL Ea Pre-Filters are designed to keep larger particles from getting into and clogging the pleats of air filters. When an air filter is clogged, the engine loses horsepower and, in the case of Ea Air Filters, the filter must be cleaned. There is no vacuum or compressed air available on the race track or out in the swamp, but an Ea Pre-Filter is easily removed and shaken free of debris in seconds.

AMSOIL EaPF
AMSOIL Ea Pre-Filters are constructed with woven mesh that contains uniformly-sized openings. They are oil-free, so the dirt will not stick to the bag and create a loss of air flow and horsepower. Several Ea Pre-Filters are treated with a hydrophobic water repellent process that helps prevent moisture from damaging air filters. This proprietary process is done at the mill as the pre-filters are created, not sprayed on, so there is no loss of air flow. While Ea Pre-Filters are effective in repelling water, they are not waterproof.

Ea Pre-Filters prevent particles down to 0.005” from getting to the air filter without significantly reducing air flow. Particles larger than 0.005” generally just fall off the pre-filter.

Will Not Block Air Flow
AMSOIL Ea Pre-Filters will not cause any significant reduction in air flow. In fact, AMSOIL EaAU and EaAR Filters allow more air flow than the engine can process, so adding an EaPF will not prevent a more-than-adequate amount of air flow from entering the engine.

EaAB Crankcase Breather Filters

AMSOIL EaAB Crankcase Breather Filters provide excellent oil vapor control, increased efficiency and better engine performance in street rod and racing applications. EaAB Filters are a perfect complement to EaAR Filters, combining to provide a superior air filtration system in high-performance and severe-service applications.

Why Are Crankcase Breathers Necessary?
Pressure builds in the engine crankcase due to vapor from the hot engine oil and from exhaust gases that escape past the piston rings. A crankcase breather system is used to release this pressure. If the breather system becomes blocked, the crankcase pressure builds internally. As the pressure increases, the oil is pushed through the area offering the least resistance, such as the dipstick or a seal. Crankcase breather filters are employed to ensure the crankcase does not become blocked with foreign materials as pressurized gases escape.

AMSOIL EaAB Filters
AMSOIL EaAB Filters are compatible with engines, transmissions and oil tanks, but are mainly designed for installation on valve covers used in high-performance and racing applications. EaAB Filters clamp directly to rubber tubing or are pushed onto rubber grommets. The EaAB- 1511, EaAB-1513 and EaAB-1514 feature a chrome shield for added protection from direct contact with dirt and grime, and all EaAB Filters feature a chrome ring with AMSOIL engraved into the top. The EaAB-1491 is a push-in filter, the others are all clamp-on designs.

Quality Construction
AMSOIL EaAB Filters are made with the same super high-quality synthetic nanofibers used in other Ea Filters. Their wire-backed pleats provide additional strength and filter longevity. The signature AMSOIL Ea blue media along with the chrome detailing make these filters an attractive fit.

Cleanable
AMSOIL EaAB Filters are cleanable, offering longer filter life. They are cleaned in the same manner as other Ea Air Filters; using either low-pressure shop air on the clean side or a vacuum on the dirty side.

AMSOIL Octane Boost is also excellent as a lead substitute at same treat rates in collector automobiles, older off-road equipment and pleasure vehicles.

Performance Features

·        Improves performance

·        Maximizes power

·        Improves ignition

·        Helps fuel burn cleaner

·        Removes carbon deposits

·        Reduces engine knock

·        Improves responsiveness

What does “octane number” mean? Why does it matter?

The tendency of a hydrocarbon fuel, such as gasoline, to knock is measured by its octane number. Lower numbers denote a greater knock tendency; higher numbers denote greater knock control. “Knock” is an uncontrolled and explosive ignition of fuel in the combustion chamber. It causes a knocking or pinging sound, robs the engine of power and, left unchecked, causes serious engine damage. Knock may be eliminated with the appropriate octane number.

Pay Attention to this one! Especially all of you who normally don’t have rebuilt engines or a good way to properly clean you fuel systems (Hornets, Flyers, etc) This is one of the most awesome cleaning products I’ve ever seen!

P.I. Performance Improver Concentrate (API)
AMSOIL PI improved fuel economy by reducing port fuel injector deposits, intake valve deposits and combustion chamber deposits in 100% of the vehicles tested!

Untreated Fuel Leads to Poor Engine Performance
A vehicle demonstrates its best efficiency and engine performance when it is new. As the engine ages, its performance suffers from gasoline fuel-generated deposits that form on the fuel injectors, intake valves and combustion chamber. Additives are required to control deposit formation.

Today’s fuels, however, lack sufficient treatments of either enough additives or high quality additives. Fuel system deposits result in the following:

• Lost fuel economy
• Lost power and poor throttle response
• Failed emission tests
• Poor drivability - surging, hesitation, stalling, rough idle
• Engine knocking (pinging) and rap

Treated Fuel Delivers Maximum Performance
AMSOIL PI is the most potent gasoline additive available today. As a concentrated detergent, it is unsurpassed in cleaning combustion chamber deposits, intake valve deposits and port fuel injector deposits. AMSOIL PI helps maintain peak engine efficiency, fuel economy, power and drivability in newer low mileage engines. In engines with accumulated deposits, testing showed AMSOIL PI provided the following clean-up benefits after only one tank of gasoline:

• Improves fuel mileage an average of 2.3% and up to 5.7%
• Reduced emissions
• hydrocarbons (HC) up to 15%
• carbon monoxide (CO) up to 26%
• nitrous oxides (NOx) up to 17%
• Restored power and performance
• Reduced need for costly higher octane fuel
• Reduced noise from carbon rap and pre-ignition
• Better drivability
• Smoother operation

.

Unsurpassed Deposit Clean-up
Port Fuel Injector Deposits form after the engine has been shut down and there is no gasoline flowing through the injectors. During this “hot soak” period the injectors heat up and the gasoline remaining in the injectors degrades and forms deposits. This can happen very quickly with the use of poor quality gasoline and short trip driving. Because the clearances within the injectors are extremely tight and injectors must deliver precise amounts of “atomized” fuel, even small amounts of deposits can cause injectors to malfunction. Fuel flow is reduced and spray patterns are disrupted, decreasing engine efficiency, power and fuel economy, while increasing exhaust emissions.

Intake Valve Deposits form on the intake side or back side of the valves. As deposits increase, they restrict airflow and alter airflow patterns in the cylinder. The deposits disrupt the balanced air/fuel ratio by momentarily absorbing and releasing fuel, and they can cause valve sticking by getting in the way of the valve stem and guide. Deposits also restrict proper seating, and the valves may be burned. Intake valve deposits cause lost engine power, increased emissions, poor engine efficiency and potential valve failure.

Combustion Chamber Deposits form on the top of the pistons and on the cylinder heads. They increase compression and absorb heat during combustion to later release it during the intake cycle. In some engines with tight squish domes, combustion chamber deposits cause the piston to actually hit the cylinder head. This is referred to as combustion chamber deposit interference or “carbon rap.” Combustion chamber deposits also flake off as they get large, and these flakes can get trapped between the valves and valve seat, resulting in compression loss, difficult starting and rough idle.

Higher compression and stored heat cause increased intake fresh charge temperatures and the increased likelihood of pre-ignition “knock” or “pinging” when the fuel spontaneously combusts prior to spark ignition. This increases emissions and may cause engine damage. Many of today’s cars have “knock” sensors that adjust spark timing to prevent knock.

Although audible knock is controlled, power is lost from retarded timing. Higher octane fuels of 4-5 octane numbers can be used to help prevent knock, an effect called “octane requirement increase.” As a vehicle ages, more expensive higher octane fuel is needed to keep it operating at peak performance. By cleaning combustion chamber deposits, knock is controlled, power is restored, fuel economy increases and higher octane fuels are less necessary for peak performance.
